Cummings Responds to U.S. Postal Service’s Intention to End Saturday Delivery PDF Print

Washington, D.C. (Feb. 6, 2013) - Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement in response to the United States Postal Service’s announcement today that it intends to end Saturday mail delivery in August:

“The Postal Service’s declining mail volume poses a significant challenge, and the enactment of comprehensive postal reform legislation must be an urgent priority for the current Congress.  However, the issue of service delivery frequency should be addressed in that legislation rather than through arbitrary action by the Postal Service.”

During the 112th Congress, Cummings introduced H.R. 2967, the Innovate to Deliver Act, to enhance the long-term profitability of the United States Postal Service through expanded innovation, operational flexibility, workforce realignment, and regulatory relief.  During the last Congress, the House of Representatives failed to consider any comprehensive reform legislation, including S. 1789 which passed the Senate on a bipartisan basis.
